When do you get to switch off?
We are now living in an era of “always on”, our phones rarely leave our sides, and it’s only the most disciplined of us who switch off all the notifications. Even then, have you noticed your muscle memory in reaching for your phone just to check for anything new?
I have.
I feel that we really need to set some boundaries around how we want to utilize tech in our lives, and to spend some time away from the screens. The one habit that I do have in that regard is that my phone stays in the living room when I go to bed. It’s funny, because when I reflect on that habit, I also realize how there is a sense of relief to leave the device behind. It feels like my bedroom is my own space, and in a way calmer.
There are a number of other things that you could try:
- setting your phone to “do not disturb”
- if you’re feeling brave, actually powering down your phone for a while (notice the discomfort at the thought?!)
- experimenting with some apps that gather data around your actual phone use – you might be surprised!
- using tools to lock certain apps for specified time periods
- agreeing with friends that you’ll put phones away whilst you’re having a conversation
- introducing “no phone meals” at home
- …
The trick is to try things out and see what works for you, at the moment. We’re all different, and need different things at different times. So play around and see what sticks!
